What It Is: Colostrum is the life-giving fluid that enhances the immune system of a newborn. Even though all mammals produce colostrum, supplements are usually made from the colostrum of cows. Bovine colostrum is similar to human colostrum – rich in vitamins, minerals, fats, carbohydrates, disease-fighting proteins, growth hormones, and digestive enzymes.
Useful For: Colostrum is a heavy source of lactoferrin and lactoglobulin that will bind up iron. Ideal for anybody with a high free iron risk index, or a low pH with an infection. It stimulates human growth hormone. It also helps produce more antibodies to fight either viral or bacterial infections. It is used along the mucosal lining and binds iron in the gastrointestinal tract. It is also found to affect the immune system as well as degenerative diseases when used in supplementation. Dr. Dwyer of the New England Journal of Medicine states, “Immunoglobulins in colostrum have been used to successfully treat: Anemia, Thrombocytopenia, Neutropenia, Myasthenia Gravis, Guillain Barré Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Systemic Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Bullous Pemphigoid, Kawasaki’s Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Crohn’s disease, among others.”*
How It Works: A mother’s colostrum supplies all the immune building antibodies, i.e., IgG, IgM, IgE and IgA, which have the capability to fight off bacteria, viruses, and allergies. In addition to supplying the immune building antibodies, a mother’s colostrum also supplies all the nutrients needed for the baby to grow.
