CoEnzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
CoEnzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
What It Is: Co-Q10 is a naturally occurring antioxidant that is necessary for energy production in every cell of the body. Also known as ubiquinone.
How It Works: Co-Q10 produces intracellular, antioxidant enzymes. When the body attains a more aerobic metabolism it will start to produce more free radicals. This is a good time to use more co-Q10. It works as a broker by taking two free radicals and bringing them together so they neutralize each other. It works inside the mitochondria where free radicals are produced. This enables the mitochondria to make more energy more efficiently.
Co-Q10 is also an antioxidant that some researchers think may protect vitamin E which in turn protects LDL from oxidation. Research performed at the University of Maryland Medical Center also found that co-Q10 hampered the ability of the blood to clot. The American Heart Association showed that long-term co-Q10 therapy was safe and effective in improving long term survival of congestive heart failure patients compared to conventionally treated patients.
As body levels of co-Q10 decrease, so does the general status of health in the individual. Published data has shown that low levels of co-Q10 the following may result in high blood pressure, heart disease, angina, immune system depression and lack of energy. Published data has also shown that overweight people have low levels of co-Q10. Deficiencies are most likely to occur in tissues that need a high energy level, such as the heart muscle, cells of the immune system and periodontal tissue. As we age, the production of co-Q10 decreases, therefore supplementation is an excellent way to provide this compound.*
