Heart Talk – Cholesterol Hysteria

Cholesterol Hysteria – The New Health Risk Created by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP)

No one is going to argue the fact that an elevated total serum cholesterol (TSC) increases one’s risk for heart disease, and that an elevated TSC needs to be reduced. That is true, and is extremely important when considering a total picture of health. However lowering TSC using a low-fat/low-cholesterol diet; without putting limits on how low it should be; without regard to HDL being lowered at the same time; without understanding the patient’s complete health picture (i.e. without understanding what caused the high TSC in the first place); and without regard to what effects a lowered TSC has on areas of health besides heart health; can be extremely dangerous.

The public is getting the message that just because heart disease can be controlled-if they would only lower their cholesterol levels-the problem is solved and needs not be looked into any more. This, of course, is wrong. When solving one problem creates another, then the first problem is not really solved-only shelved.

Description

Some of Sam’s earliest interests had to do with heart health, particularly from the aspect of eggs and cholesterol. This was because of a challenge in the early 1980’s from the Wallace Genetic Foundation to investigate the health aspects of eggs.

His first newsletter was Heart Talk, which was published from 1983-1989.

Each issue reflects his focus on the science behind every concept, and you can follow the development of his Health Model as he began to connect the dots between heart health and many other areas of health.
