Put Down The Duckie – Gently Releasing Old Habits For A Healthier Life
Betty used to joke that her eyes would glaze over when Sam started excitedly talking about the science that his concepts were based on! She wanted to focus on how that information could be translated into everyday living. So Put Down The Duckie was born.
The resulting 12 issues that she and Sam created together help you change your lifestyle gradually and painlessly. Each focuses on one of Sam’s health concepts, with the attitude that habits are acquired over time and therefore need time to be changed. With some science, stories, recipes and hints, you are gently guided toward doing just that.
Originally planned as a bi-monthly newsletter to give you a couple of months to bond with a new habit before starting on the next one – you can use these different issues and topics to plan your own program, knowing that at every step you’re improving your health for the long term.
Read MoreThe final incarnation of Sam’s official writing became the Health Realities Journal, published from 1994-2010. Each issue of this journal outlines the science associated with each topic in detail, but then also addresses related diet, supplemental, and lifestyle practical applications that can be used to address patient issues. Complete annotations are included for all scientific references used in their compilation.
Currently we are offering 40% off a set of all available journal issues still in print.
Read MoreIron Status: The Good, the Bad and the Ironic
An altered iron status may underlie almost all health conditions, from anemia to every cancer, disease, infection and toxicity. Sadly, the typical chemistry profile is gross lacking in the markers needed to make an iron status assessment – and even when a full iron assessment is required, clinicians are often confused about which markers to order and how to interpret the test results. All of this is addressed, along with an introduction of IHR’s Free Iron Risk Index (FIRI) to better assess the influence of acid pH on free iron risk.

Cholesterol Hysteria – The New Health Risk Created by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP)
No one is going to argue the fact that an elevated total serum cholesterol (TSC) increases one’s risk for heart disease, and that an elevated TSC needs to be reduced. That is true, and is extremely important when considering a total picture of health. However lowering TSC using a low-fat/low-cholesterol diet; without putting limits on how low it should be; without regard to HDL being lowered at the same time; without understanding the patient’s complete health picture (i.e. without understanding what caused the high TSC in the first place); and without regard to what effects a lowered TSC has on areas of health besides heart health; can be extremely dangerous.
The public is getting the message that just because heart disease can be controlled-if they would only lower their cholesterol levels-the problem is solved and needs not be looked into any more. This, of course, is wrong. When solving one problem creates another, then the first problem is not really solved-only shelved.

Read MoreViruses are encased in a protein. The virus will affect us only when a protease enzyme of some kind destroys the protein encasement. Glutathione can destroy the protease that a virus produces.
Reduced Glutathione selectively scavenges for free radicals that vitamin E can’t reach and helps prevent free radical formation in the first place by attaching to and neutralizing sulfhydryl-friendly oxidants, such as mercury and other heavy metals.
Glutathione is oxidized and must be converted back to the reduced state before it is again useful. Some products fail to comply with this need and are marketed as a mixture of reduced and oxidized glutathione. Such products will only say “Glutathione” on the label. Make sure you only get one that says REDUCED GLUTATHIONE on the bottle.

Read MoreLaying the Groundwork for Clinical Use
Protease supplementation has been promoted for various reasons for many years – such as utilization of serum protein, minimization of scar tissue after surgery, countering muscle and connective tissue wasting, slowing and preventing progression of cataracts – to name just a few. Yet, academic institutions have long discredited its benefit. This issue provides an understanding of the nuances surrounding the practical, beneficial use of protease enzymes, as well as the potential risks; along with an in-depth explanation of the basic functions of proteases and their inhibitors, and the mechanisms of absorption for each.

Read MoreInflammation
Inflammation is absolutely necessary if repair of damaged tissues to to take place, but chronic inflammation is the main producer of free radicals, which can lead to a worsening of the patient’s condition – especially where autoimmune disease is involved. The value of steroid therapy is well established, but select nutrients offer a safer and more effective approach. Explains how the body handles inflammation naturally, which nutrients are involved, and at what dosage. By implementing this information, doctors can markedly reduce the need for steroid drugs and avoid them entirely in some cases – thereby avoiding the risk of serious side effects. How, when, and at what dosage anti-inflammatory nutrients should be administered are thoroughly covered – information that can assist the patient in recovery from virtually every disease.

Read MoreWhat It Is: Brewer’s yeast – produced in the making of beer – is loaded with nutrition, containing all the essential amino acids, B vitamins, chromium GTF (glucose tolerance factor) and trace minerals.
Useful For: Rebuilding nerves.*
How It Works: Brewer’s yeast is often recommended for people who are trying to get a little bit of extra nutrition in their diet, as well as for people with neurological problems due to mercury toxicity.
Contrary to popular belief, Brewer’s yeast does not cause candida (yeast infections), but people who have a food sensitivity to yeast proteins may react to it slightly.
What To Look For: Don’t purchase nutritional yeast, which is of variable quality and generally lacking in GTF.

Read MoreReversing Chemical- or Neurotoxin-Induced Damage to the Brain and Nervous System – The Role of Fruits, Vegetables, and Whole Eggs
The fact that diet and lifestyle play an important role in the normal functioning of the nervous system and mental health is hardly a new revelation. Most people suffer the effects of heavy metals and neurotoxic chemicals without ever recognizing the cause. The initial damage is inflicted through free radical oxidation of the membrane lipids that are vital to the function and integrity of nerve and brain tissue.
By integrating the information found here into a treatment program many of those affected by neurotoxins can again live a fruitful and productive life.

The final issue of this newsletter, in recognition that the amalgam issue – although currently on hold – was on track to be resolved in favor of recognition that changes were necessary, covers updated research in all aspects of the previously-discussed topics. There is also a discussion of the cholesterol/mercury connection.
At this point, Sam made the decision to focus on the Health Talk series of writings with more of a focus on overall health and how all things interrelate.

Read MoreVitamin D: Health Panacea or Killer?
We Have A Choice
Vitamin D has been touted as the wonder vitamin. At first blush the reasoning seems sound, and the practice of recommending a vitamin D supplement to anyone who bears a low vitamin D reading has become commonplace. But careful examination also uncovers layers within the research that raise concerns. This four-part series-in-one, addresses the big picture, identifies risks, instructs in how to properly and effectively assess vitamin D status, and guide you in protocols for proceeding. This is the best clinical example of why a Human Health Model is so vitally necessary for understanding chemistry. Disease Model interpretation will always mislead with hormone chemistry.

**GOOD NEWS!! After being told yet again that our previous supplier will be out for at least ANOTHER 2 months, we went in search of our own supplier of pure New Zealand bovine colostrum – Sam’s preferred source – and it has now arrived directly from New Zealand!**
What It Is: Colostrum is the life-giving fluid that enhances the immune system of a newborn. Even though all mammals produce colostrum, supplements are usually made from the colostrum of cows. Bovine colostrum is similar to human colostrum – rich in vitamins, minerals, fats, carbohydrates, disease-fighting proteins, growth hormones, and digestive enzymes.
Useful For: Colostrum is a heavy source of lactoferrin and lactoglobulin that will bind up iron. Ideal for anybody with a high free iron risk index, or a low pH with an infection. It stimulates human growth hormone. It also helps produce more antibodies to fight either viral or bacterial infections. It is used along the mucosal lining and binds iron in the gastrointestinal tract. It is also found to affect the immune system as well as degenerative diseases when used in supplementation. Dr. Dwyer of the New England Journal of Medicine states, “Immunoglobulins in colostrum have been used to successfully treat: Anemia, Thrombocytopenia, Neutropenia, Myasthenia Gravis, Guillain Barré Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Systemic Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Bullous Pemphigoid, Kawasaki’s Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Crohn’s disease, among others.”*
How It Works: A mother’s colostrum supplies all the immune building antibodies, i.e., IgG, IgM, IgE and IgA, which have the capability to fight off bacteria, viruses, and allergies. In addition to supplying the immune building antibodies, a mother’s colostrum also supplies all the nutrients needed for the baby to grow.
